The Climate Reality Project and Leadership Program

I am often asked how a person can get involved and do service work related to the climate crisis. One initiative I suggest is the "Climmate Reality Leadership Corps." The Leadarship Corps Program has trained thousands of people around thew world to be "Climate Reality Leaders" - educators about the climate crisis and advocates for constructive climate action. The Training is free, and the next training takes place in April. Some trainings are on site (I did the training a few years ago in Australia) but the April training is on-line. This virtual event does not require travel, and there is no registration fee. A number of OSU students have participated in the training and have become Climate Realty Leaders. To participate you need to apply - and the application deadline is in early March. For details: https://www.climaterealityproject.org/training

  1. Oh wow, I think that would be a great opportunity. I also like that theres a chance to travel to other places. What kind of work is there? Does the program help pay for housing?

    1. This program does not involve travel or funding. It is a program of climate change educators and communicators.

  2. This sounds like a really unique opportunity, it's nice that there is both online and in-person training so that more people are able to contribute to the cause.

  3. It is fascinating that you do not need to go anywhere or pay a fee for this training. I wonder what the next step is once you become a Climate Realty Leader. Do you go to events? Can you spread awareness in you day-to-day life?

    1. CR leaders try to do ten or more "climate actions" each year. This could include attending events, writing a letter to the editor, giving talks...

  4. This is such a good way to learn more about climate change. The ability to do the program both online and in-person creates more opportunities for people with busy schedules to participate.

  5. This opportunity brings into my mind the thesis project. This could be an opportunity to start one's research on climate crisis for the project. Not only that but it can also provide research opportunities for someone who is simply interested on this topic. I know that this is a unique opportunity, especially through a college professor's relation to the global crisis in the real world and society. This also provides the chance to become a leader and feel responsible as a human being to take on this initiative on behalf of other people. Both ethically and academically, it is an opportunity that someone should take if they have the time, effort, and/or interest to do so.

An article in relation to this topic is shown here: https://www.oregonmetro.gov/news/fight-my-generation-meet-four-youth-working-climate-justice

This article portrays young people like us taking initiative in response to climate crisis, and it is powerful and moving just by reading what they have planned out and done. In the real world, people much older than the teenagers described in the article avoid in taking any responsibility or initiative to tackle the problem. This opportunity, therefore, is once again a great step for someone to take in support of our world's climate crisis.

    1. Thank you for these comments and the article. Climate action runs from local to global.

  6. This is a fantastic project. I do think it is very important to get young people to interact and working policy for climate change. I do wonder what this group does for properly educating the individuals within it. I notice that a lot of climate action groups focus on awareness for problems and do not necessarily provide possible solutions. This doom and gloom mentality pushes a lot of young people away from from wanting to participate. I do wonder what this group does to combat this issue and keep young audiences engaged.

  7. This sounds like a great opportunity, especially since leaders can participate both in person and online. It really reflects how climate change has no boundaries and is affecting everyone, meaning we all have some sort of responsibility to address it and do as much as we can to reduce our negative impacts on the environment.

  8. This program has great potential to children and adults to participate in becoming involved with the climate to provide change and a better climate for future generations. I aspire that we are finding ways to inspire people to become more involved in understanding that climate change is a real thing, and we must take it seriously.

  9. I really like how one thing this training curriculum emphasizes is connecting the dots between climate change and broader environmental justice issues like air pollution or other losses and damages. I think that making these connections can help develop broader implications of climate change on people around the world, especially minorities and those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Although I think doing this training in person would provide a unique experience, especially getting to travel, the fact that this training is online and free makes it accessible to everyone. This also seems like a great launching point to getting further involved in climate change advocacy.

  10. I like the idea of this project and it appears to have goals with good intentions. I simply find it a bit odd that joining a society like this can grant some official title with a standing that I question. What power or significance does this training actually provide the user? Perhaps a better understanding of the issue is good but it seems to be a bit of a political ploy. What significance does this training have to actually effecting the overall problem? Why are they focused on changing the minds of one person at a time rather than requiring large corporations that have significant impact on the world to follow extreme regulations that practically restrain their abilities to freely generate greenhouse gases.

  11. It's great to see that there are invitations out there that allow people to get involved in the fight against the climate crisis. The Climate Reality Leadership Corps Program sounds like an excellent opportunity for individuals to become educated about the issue and take constructive action. The fact that training is free and can be done online is fantastic, it makes it accessible to people all over the world. It's also inspiring to hear that other OSU students have participated in the training.

  12. This opportunity seems like an excellent program for all people regardless of background and experience get involved and help make a difference on a global scale. I like how they have opportunities to get involved online. I think one benefit we gained through covid was increased technology to make things like this possible. I wonder will any of my classmates here at OSU will get involved?

  13. The Leadership Corps Program is a program that piques my interest, however, I wonder if this program focuses on climate change as whole or different aspects of climate crisis issues. But overall I believe that this is a good program because it provides a structured and supportive environment for people like myself to develop their leadership skills and knowledge, while also providing opportunities to make a positive impact in different communities.

  14. The Leadership Corps Program sounds like a fantastic opportunity, but I wondered how the organization promotes such a program. With this being the first time I have heard of it, I would like to know if there is a better way in which the organization could get the word out about what they are doing, as I know many people who would be interested in signing up. Could the educators set up a booth at universities or advertise on social media to gain support and numbers for such a program?

  15. I am very interested in this Leadership Corps Program. I really like the concept that it is an online program, so it doesn't require travel. This makes the program so much more accessible to many more people. Furthermore, I think that climate change is a serious issue, so we need important leaders to help create a change. I am interested in what type of training is involved, and how I might be able to connect with other people wanting to act against climate change. Also, the fact that there is no registration fee makes this program very intriguing. I am considering doing this project in the future.

  16. This is super interesting. I don't think I've ever heard of anything like this, a leadership program for how to be a leader in a particular policy issue (climate change in particular here). But it makes perfect sense. People can't just be advocates for something, with nothing, there needs to be a solid base. This is what true infrastructure for the climate movement looks like, and it's how we deploy this movement on all levels, from the smallest local community, to the halls of congress. TL;DR: This is awesome.
I'm not too sure about registering for it now, given that the deadline is in a few days and I have fair share of other commitments, but I'm glad to have this as a potential resource for the future.

  17. This program sounds really interesting, I like how this program is all online and doesn't require travel at all. It's great to see that there are leadership programs like these for people who are unable to travel. I think it's cool how you traveled to Australia for this training a few years ago, I'm curious if travel will be an option for this program in the future. The deadline is March 20th which is only a few days away from when I'm writing this post, so I might consider doing this program in the future.

  18. I think this program seems very interested. I think that many people wonder how they can make a difference in the fight against climate change because they feel that there isn't much of a difference that they can make on their own. This training through the Climate Reality Leadership Corps seems like a good way to get started if you don't know where to. It also seems like an easy way to get other people involved. This way you can get more people to make a change for the world. All you need is to send them the link to this website and they can easily get started on their own.

  19. I think this program is a great way for people to climate reality leaders. I love how the training is free and is virtual which allows ease of access which no financial stress. This program can really help make a change and have more people advocate for climate action.

  20. While immediate action is usually the most emphasized aspect of climate action, there are many other important factors that we need to consider. One of these factors is educating future generations to be more environmentally aware, because this struggle to achieve climate goals does not simply end in 2050. The future of humanity will likely need to continue to combat global warming far past that date. This is where programs like the “Climate Reality Leaders Corps” are important. While we may be unable to change the minds of many who deny climate change right now, we can start the process through education and the development of leaders who will be at the forefront of humanity’s future climate activism.

  21. This sounds like a great opportunity for induvial looking to get into climate change advocacy! As someone who has always been driven and advocated for climate change this training is definitely something that I will be looking more into as it only provides positive information on a topic that I hope I can make some sort of change towards. After looking more into this training, I think that this is something that myself and all induvial could benefit from. By better educating ourselves on this topic then we are able to better understand and educate other individuals from our family's, collogues, and even other students.

  22. This seems like an amazing opportunity for anyone looking into making a difference in climate change and make an impact on the world. I think it's great that anyone of all ages, races and genders can participate in something together that makes a positive impact on the world. Also I think by sharing this it will help reach out to more people that otherwise would not have heard about this amazing program.

  23. The Climate Reality Project and Leadership Program sounds like a really important step in spreading the skills necessary to fight climate change on the ground all around the world. I hope to achieve similar things in my future career as a forester, but this gives me an opportunity to start now and help my community immediately. Thank you for sharing this incredible resource and program.

  24. Oh wow this is amazing! I love that you can travel to different places! What kind of work is specifically done there? I love that the senator of Oregon, Ron Wyden, is going to be a speaker!

  25. I actually signed up to be a part of this recently and am super excited for what the future holds for it! Alongside this climate advocacy group, there's another one that perhaps might pique someone's interest and its called the citizens climate lobby https://citizensclimatelobby.org/ and does virtually the same thing and you can work through their system and get certified to teach people about climate change and advocacy in your own community. Super cool stuff!
