When the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established in the 1990s, negotiators focused on greenhouse gas emissions, or GHGs. They discussed mitigation actions; ways to reduce GHGs. The landmark Kyoto Protocol of 1997 (at COP 3) emphasized mitigation, with commitments from developed countries to reduce their production of and reliance on fossil fuels. The 2015 Paris Agreement set the goal of a global temperature rise of no more than 1.5 degrees centigrade by 2050. This goal would be achieved only if developed countries - the major GHG emitters - transitioned significantly to renewable energy sources. This has not happened. Countries are expanding their use of renewables but not fast enough th meet the 1.5 degree goal. Consequently, negotiators now devote considerable time to discussing adaptation - how to deal with a warming world and its consequencxes, such as wildfires, drought, intense hurricanes and typhoons... The 2023 National Climate Report is incredibly important. According to the report, “Even if greenhouse gas emissions fall substantially, the impacts of climate change will continue to intensify over the next decade,”. This is incredibly frightening to read. However we can't simply hide under the cover of ignorance and pretend like this isn't happening. I believe that everyone should read the report, or at least learn the contents. In communicating the report to the public, there needs to be a balance of the terrifying truth and the optimistic possibilities. People need to retain hope, and know ways they can make a difference, whether it be by signing petitions, contacting lawmakers, or boycotting corporations. An effective way to spread the information would be through social media. Countless people have stopped reading the news entirely, instead getting their information from social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. This isn't ideal, due to the nonexistent vetting of misinformation. However, If the truth of the climate crisis was spread by various sources through social media, the reach could be far greater than traditional news reporting.
ReplyDeleteThe 2023 National Climate Report is definitely important as it shares what is currently happening, obviously globally. It shows the rapid changes that everyday people not tuned into the climate crisis should know and just all around provides further education which I believe is always a good thing. It is interesting that between the five years of 2013-2018 it got less publicity but it does not surprise me as it seems people choose to not read it as to not change their ways. I believe that if not read it, everyone should at least be aware of it and what it says, as it is a current report on the world. I feel like a good way to get people to read it would to report it on the news or even in PSA type commercials. Social media is also a great way to get the word out about it as it is a place on the internet most people find themselves.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the 2023 National Climate Report is an important and necessary report, especially considering how little publicity the 2018 National Climate Report got. The findings in the National Climate Report and the alarming speed at which they are effecting every corner of the nation is something that should be broadcast to the U.S.. I hope that the report is displayed to the United States citizens, so that people can recognize how bad the issue of climate change has become, and take steps to alleviate the problem. All people in the U.S. should be informed about this report, as they are the ones being effected. The findings of the National Climate Report can probably best be disseminated through social media, considering that more than 300 million Americans use social media. It is also a quick and cheap way to spread information, and it requires only the push of a button.

I think the 2023 National Climate Report should be a wake up call to everyone. The most interesting parts to me were those that focused on economics. For example, the report said that climate change is costing the US at least $1 billion every three weeks, compared to once every four months in the 1980s. This shows that climate change is not something that we have to worry about in the future, it is directly harming our economic wellbeing right now. Another interesting finding was that costs for wind and solar energy has fallen 70% and 90% respectively. The costs of renewable energy is falling at the same time that the costs of climate change are rapidly increasing. Regardless of your political views any sane economist would see the simple solution of investing heavily in renewable energy and disinvesting in coal, oil, and other fossil fuels. And even if in some bizarre world it turns out climate change isn't real, we would still be better off making these investments in energy that is cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable.
ReplyDeleteClimate reports can inform policy decisions, guide adaptation and mitigation strategies, and raise public awareness about the urgency of addressing environmental challenges. That's why the most recent 2023 report needs to be taken with extreme weight, as the current climate change situation calls for more urgency than ever before. The level of urgency that we can distill from the report tells us that a collective and immediate response is needed on a global scale. We must use this report and apply it to a solution because it captures events like the impacts of weather, rising sea levels, and other ecosystem disruption. These problems will become irreversible with each passing year. There is an immediate need for adaptive measures to protect communities and ecosystems, and the 2023 National Climate Report is the key to fulfill it.
ReplyDeleteConsidering that this report is published every 5 years, the 2023 National Climate Report is extremely important. With the increase in climate change crisis events, the severity of the problem becomes even more clear to the uneducated. This 2023 National Climate Report entails a harsh reality, from the fires in Hawaii to wildfire smoke in the East Coast, according to the report. The report also concludes that the crisis has only since increased from the previous one. Adam Terando, a geological survey scientist and co-author of the report, states that the overarching idea that humans are the fundamental cause of climate change can become repetitive. However, it is precisely because the message is repetitive that we must do something about it. An analogy of this would be leaving a splinter on your finger. You know that it is there, yet you do nothing about it. This problem, on a much bigger scale than the analogy demonstrated, is further justified by the 2023 Climate Change Report. By the time the 2028 Climate Change Report releases, the planet that we know may look drastically different from now. The report signifies and encourages that a change and solution to climate change must occur now, no matter how small it is.
ReplyDeleteBy only publishing a report every 5 years there is an added shock factor when we finally do get the report and see how much has changed in just 5 years. The 2023 report should act as a wakeup call to everyone that this is no longer just a climate change but rather a climate crisis. It is obvious in the report that things have only gotten worse in the last 5 years, and something is going to need to change. These reports can be very helpful in understanding what we can do to prevent any further damage from occurring. This is because we can examine what has changed in human activity in the last 5 years that has caused such an increase in the volatility of the climate crisis. We need to start taking steps toward a solution even if we have to take small steps in the beginning and it starts with you and I
ReplyDeleteGiven that the National Climate report is only published every 5 years I believe that is a very important document for general public to know about. While to many, climate change may seem like something that will effect the future generations, the fact is that it is effecting us here and now. This report reveals the undeniable impact that climate change has on our lives right now. With each National Climate report the urgency of addressing the climate crisis becomes more and more apparent, arming the citizens with knowledge surrounding climate change is the only way we can make sufficient change. - John Scumniotales, Section 23
ReplyDeleteThe 2023 National Climate Report is profoundly impactful. This report, which presents an exhaustive analysis of climate science by over 750 experts, reveals a startling reality: the U.S. is experiencing a rapid increase in harmful impacts due to climate change, from extreme heat to sea level rise, affecting every corner of the country.
ReplyDeleteThis report highlights the urgency of the situation, noting that despite reductions in emissions since 2007, the U.S. is still not on track to meet international climate change targets. With disasters costing billions in damages becoming more frequent, the need for swift and substantial action is clear. The report emphasizes that the choices made now will shape the future trajectory of climate change and its impacts for generations to come.
One of the most striking aspects of the report is its emphasis on the unequal burden of climate change. Overburdened communities are feeling the brunt of these impacts more acutely, underscoring the need for environmental justice in our response to the climate crisis. The Biden administration’s efforts, including significant investments in clean energy and adaptation strategies, reflect a recognition of this urgency, but the challenge remains monumental.
The National Climate Assessment's findings are of paramount importance, offering a critical perspective on the escalating challenges posed by climate change. It is a crucial resource for policymakers, environmentalists, and anyone concerned with the future of our planet. Its comprehensive analysis makes it essential reading for decision-makers at all levels of government and industry, as it provides a clear picture of the current state of the climate crisis and its implications for the United States. Communicating its findings to the general public is equally vital. This can be achieved through simplified summaries, engaging infographics, and widespread media coverage, ensuring that the complex scientific data is accessible and understandable. Disseminating the key messages of this report in public forums and media channels is essential for building collective awareness and motivating widespread action to tackle the urgent challenges of climate change.
This report is very important. With the report only happening every 5 years, the data is very shocking. It is shocking because so much can happen in 5 years and the report shows that. With "climate crisis causing disruption to all regions of the US." Everyone should be read this report or at least know of it. I think the news should show it. Not to scare everyone but to wake them up and hopefully make them realize what is happening. I think that we could make the climate crisis better, but what we need to do is inform the general public with information and facts that show what is happening to the world we live in. That way everyone can take tiny leaps to help solve this ever growing problem.
ReplyDeleteI think that the National Climate Assessment is extremely important to read, and should be much more publicly known of. Before this, I had never heard of or read it. I feel like it provides a comprehensive but detailed coverage of what is happening, and I personally love all the maps and graphs. I feel like so much climate news just fear mongers people to where they have no hope, but this is just pure, accessible information.
ReplyDeleteOne of the good things I noticed is that even though the US economy and population have grown, total emissions have gone down. The graphs show that both EV and solar power usage have exponentially grown, which is good!
One of the more sad things is that the economic effects of climate caused disasters are growing. A statistic that stood out to me is that "The US now experiences, on average, a billion-dollar weather or climate disaster every three weeks" along with a map highlighting the most effected states, Florida and California being a couple of them.
Overall, I think the NCA should be more widely advertised in the news, on social media, no matter what it takes to get it out there.
I hope I read the right thing!

ReplyDeleteThe National Climate Assessment report underscores the critical importance of acknowledging and comprehending the imminent dangers posed by climate change in the United States. The document serves as a stark reminder that the consequences are not a distant, abstract concept but are unfolding across the nation. From extreme heatwaves to rising sea levels, the report elucidates the tangible and worsening impacts on diverse regions, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change. Its emphasis on escalating dangers, including wildfires, severe heat, and flooding, points to a pressing need for swift and decisive action. Moreover, the report sheds light on the economic toll of climate-related disasters, with the frequency of billion-dollar damages occurring every three weeks, highlighting the direct financial consequences of inaction. It is a call to recognize that the risks are not only environmental but also have immediate and tangible implications for communities, economies, and the overall well-being of the nation. In a perfect world this would pop up on people's social media and many people would be able to see this.
I personally believe that this report is incredibly important. I believe that as many people as possible should read this report, it would be to educate the general public. In order for this to reach more people maybe it should be published in more places, not many people read the guardian that I know of. In order to reach as many people as possible it might be beneficial to spread it through social media. The reason it might have lost publicity could be because there was a decline in the website or maybe more and more people are no longer interested in National Climate Report. I don't know how to increase the publicity of the National Climate Report, but it is incredibly important to what is happening the world today and the more people that read it the more people it will influence to do better.
ReplyDeleteI think this report does a really good job of capturing how real and impactful the climate crisis really is. I also think it's a great thing we have reports like this one with accurate and reliable information to keep everybody updated on the most current situation. I find it surprising that the report has lost publicity since 2013, though, since climate change is a bigger issue than ever now. Regardless, it's nice to know that a resource like this is widely available. In terms of who should read it, I believe as many people as possible should become educated on the topic, especially through reports like this. The Guardian has done the most it can; make a report on the climate crisis and fill it with accurate and reliable data. It's difficult to publicize something like this, as some people, unfortunately, will simply never care enough to read a report like this one.
ReplyDeleteThe report does an excellent job of conveying the climate change issue. The article made me sad to read, it is very worrisome to see the drastic increases in temperature and emissions. This article goes much more in-depth about the actual data, I feel like most people do not know all of that information. I think that those in high school level or above should read this article, as it shows very striking and real data about climate change, but I think it might be a little too advanced to necessarily teach to elementary-age children. I think publicizing this article can be hard, as a large part of our population does not read news articles anymore, most people rely on getting blips of information and couldn't bother to read a whole article.
ReplyDeleteThe National Climate Report is very important and every person who can read it should read it. This report gives a perspective on the climate change issue and with this information, people can try to make a change. I am unsure of the best way to communicate it to the general public because younger people are mostly on social media platforms such as TikTok, but those who are older may lean towards news on television or other platforms. It is also difficult to say because way too many people deny climate change or do not believe in the severity and would turn the channel or scroll past.
ReplyDeleteI did not know that the United States had a "congressionally mandated" climate assessment previously. It seems like a very good idea. However, I'm surprised it's only released every five years. It seems like with an issue so pressing, you'd want to put out a report ever year or two at the latest. Continuing at the current rate, there will only be five or six more until 2050, when the U.S needs to be net zero. It seems each of the following reports will have need to made many major - yet doable - accomplishments to reach this goal.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone should read the report. Having said that, it is long and many people would prefer some sort of shorter version they can engage with. This should come in the forms of television, newspaper, or social media depending on consumers' preferences.
Considering that the US Federal Government releases the National Climate Report every five years, it is incredibly important now more than ever especially since climate change has only gotten worse since 2013 (when the NSC first received publicity). Like what my fellow, intelligent classmate Joey said above—I too was unaware that the United States had a "congressionally mandated" climate assessment. I find the publication frequency to also be strange as climate change has been a major environmental problem dating back to the pre-industrial period, when it was first observed. Considering that we all live on planet Earth, I think it's necessary that EVERYONE reads this report and could use increased exposure through mainstream media and social media—where most people nowadays get their news and information from. Additionally, presenting the report in various media forms could help to communicate the message to the general public. Once again... I have to agree with Joey on his statement regarding "a shorter version" of the climate report to keep the reader's attention. A suggestion could be to offer the National Climate report through a video which the message will be received more quickly and efficiently. Furthermore, I believe that these climate assessments should be released more frequently in order to keep everyone on track with current issues and solutions being set forth, however, I understand that these reports require time to develop and so it may not be necessarily possible to release coherent and accurate reports.
