Staying positive, hopeful, and optimistic

I hope that people who are concerned about the climate crisis take some form of action. That they are not staying on the sidelines, being spectators, and remaining passive. This article is encouraging - offering ideas about what people can do. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/09/what-are-the-most-powerful-climate-actions-you-can-take?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Trying to predict the future

Climate science involves models and forecasts - in an attempt to deal with uncertainty, create future scenrarios, and predict the future. This article explores a possible future. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/11/brutal-heatwaves-submerged-cities-what-3c-world-would-look-like?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

How will (or does) the climate crisis affect older generations?

Thinking about your elders - grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles... https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/14/heat-exposure-of-older-people-across-the-world-to-double-by-2050-finds-study?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

What will (or should) the politicians do?

For most US Americans, the climate crsisis is not one of the most important issues. But to many members of younger generations, it is an important concern. Regardless of your political leanings (or your family's), there is value in learning where candidates for office stand on the climate change issue. Let's share articles about candidates - regardless of party and specific office. And does this matter? Here are links to some recent articles about where former President Trump may stand.... https://apple.news/ArD_zM2NERdWxuqzDk9BScw https://apple.news/A1A4TsfBwS4mWIs6oK4QkcA https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/16/donald-trump-big-oil-executives-alleged-deal-explained?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other And an article about a recent action of Florida Governor DeSantis... https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/16/desantis-climate-change-energy-bill?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Confronting the Climate Crisis - Getting Involved

People often ask me how they can get involved in climate change work.  Students and younger generations (e.g., Gen Z) tell me that one of their biggest concerns is the climate crisis.  I have included here a list of organizations (with links) that provide opportunities to get involved.  I participate, for example, in the Leadership Program of the Climate Reality Project. Climate Change/Crisis Organizations Climate Reality Project – Leadership Corps https://www.climaterealityproject.org/ https://www.climaterealityproject.org/training   YOUNGO - The Youth Non-Government Organization Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change http://www.youngo.uno/   RINGO – The Research and Independent Non-Government Organization Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change https://ringosnet.wordpress.com/   Fridays for the Future https://fridaysforfuture.org/ Sunrise Movement https://www.sunrisemovement.org/   ...

The Climate Reality Project and Leadership Program

I am often asked how a person can get involved and do service work related to the climate crisis. One initiative I suggest is the "Climmate Reality Leadership Corps." The Leadarship Corps Program has trained thousands of people around thew world to be "Climate Reality Leaders" - educators and communicators about the climate crisis and advocates for constructive climate action. The Training is free. Some trainings are on site (I did the training a few years ago in Australia) but trainings have been held virtually. The virtual event does not require travel, and there is no registration fee. A number of OSU students have participated in the training (both on-site and virtual) and have become Climate Reality Leaders. To participate you need to apply. Check the website for information about the program and the trainings. There is a local chapter - based in Portland. For details: https://www.climaterealityproject.org/training
