Climate Megaprojects that Might offer Hope for the Future

Poated on Apple New Service: "When it comes to fighting climate change, many strategies require relatively small actions from large numbers of people. It is about millions of us installing heat pumps, switching to electric vehicles, eschewing meat in our diets and so on. But given the sheer scale of the challenge, there are those who insist we need to think bigger and bolder too." Large-scale projects and technological advances have been critical to advances in many aspects of society. What about the climate crisis?

I really appreciate the sentiment this encourages, that progress in the climate crisis does not solely fall on the citizens it affects. Rather, it is a matter of a larger scale, one that can only be impacted by people and companies with equally as large of a reach. An example of small actions combined with larger efforts would be an increase in public transit in cities, big and small. As it is, besides in large metropolitan areas, there is very ineffective public transit. For example, in Corvallis, there is really only the BeaverBus which can be confusing, untimely, and cumbersome for users. This and other major projects nationwide should be employed sooner than later to slow down the rapid downfall of our home. This is an article which proves the effectiveness of public transit nationwide.https://www.wri.org/insights/current-state-of-public-transport-climate-goals
ReplyDeleteAs I have gotten older, I have realized that the little things people do and the actions they take still are making a difference. But, also one negative effect can affect something so much more. As Ashley has said above, I agree with her. I think the increase in public transport would reduce the amount of gas and pollution being put out, and public transport could be such an easy task to take on. I agree with her when she says, we can change that but we would need to start now. For example, we do only have one bus, and increasing the public transport would reduce the pollution from cars all over and be more successful in reducing pollution. In this article I found from Transportation of UCLA, it gives multiple ideas of reducing pollution by using sustainable transportation. It has stated increasing public transportation will help with less pollution and clearer skies, healthier communities, harmful chemicals will be reduced, and this overall will also help with lessening cars on the road. https://transportation.ucla.edu/blog/5-environmental-benefits-sustainable-transportation. Overall, public transportation would affect us positively, and this small action could change so much.
ReplyDeleteI think this article is just amazing. I completely agree with the idea of these mega projects, much more than the idea of trying to slow global warming down and other climate issues through means such as cutting meat out of the diet. I believe that projects like this have the potential to essentially save our planet. I think continuously trying to implement mega projects is the best course of action. Mainly because it is almost a rinse and repeat sequence, if one fails, try another. And while I understand that the failure of these mega projects will lead to even further implications within our planet, I think it is worth a try. For example, I believe that the idea of energy islands would be a great way to test out a mega project. There are not that many consequences to failure, and success rate is substantially high considering windmills have constantly been made for years.
ReplyDeleteI think a big project that the government should do is start working on implementing the new green deal and phasing out fossil fuels, using solar energy or even nuclear energy to power our planet. If we can all vote to implement the new green deal our government will have to start making a change for the better of the planet. I also think a new president that cares about the rise of global temperatures would be great so we also need to vote for a better president who cares about our planet. We can all do little things like buying less clothes, driving less, not littering, picking up trash, planting trees, and being kind to our earth because it is very important.
ReplyDeleteThere is very little the individual consumer can do to mitigate climate change, even if it a large number of individuals. The vast majority of carbon emission come from big corporations and rich people, and no amount of paper straws will change that. In order to mitigate climate change, laws and regulations need to be put in place restricting the usage of fossil fuels and the dumping of hazardous waste.
